Balancing the client's desire for a contemporary aesthetic and that of an island cottage, D+A studio created a two-bedroom residence on the west side of San Juan Island with sweeping views of the Puget Sound.
Raised off the ground to minimize its impact and to capture water views, this island retreat uses both sustainable features and a modern aesthetic to create a simple vacation home for a Seattle couple.
The home is designed to maximize flexibility and require little maintenance. The rooms are oriented to maximize views of the sound and allow natural ventilation throughout.
The simple construction, use of less toxic materials and emphasis on indoor air quality exemplifies D+A’s commitment that every house built qualifies for Built Green and American Lung Association Health House Certifications, while maintaining the client’s budget and vision for the design.
