Churchill Corner occupies the most prominent corner on San Juan Island. With a location across from the Washington State Ferry Terminal, it was essential that the large building be designed to harmonize with the existing traditional fabric of the small town of Friday Harbor.
D+A studio worked with the community to relocate the existing historic home that originally occupied the property. By following the Historic Presentation Review Board’s Design Guidelines, an additional story was allowed and parking could be reduced to half of that traditionally required by the city.
In order to activate the site, the building was split into three parts that surround a network of pedestrian alleyways that connect the town with an adjacent park, provide for retail spaces on two ground floors, and allow us to capture views of the harbor from all five of the condominiums above.
Intense coordination was required between all the members of the project team. D+A studio balanced the needs of the client and contractor, the community, the Historic Preservation Review Board, and five different engineering disciplines. D+A studio utilized the Seattle office to coordinate with the engineering firms in the city and produce the working drawings, while the Friday Harbor office served as the local base, enabling D+A to be easily accessible to the client and to reach out to the community.
